Former Celtic Cedric Maxwell to speak at dinner

Cedric Maxwell, former Boston Celtic great, will be in town to support The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill.

He will be the guest speaker when the club holds its annual celebration March 8 at DiBurro’s function hall.

A cocktail hour and silent auction is from 6 to 7 p.m. Dinner and Maxwell’s presentation is from 7 to 8 p.m. The program and live auction is from 8 to 9:15 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person or $900 for a table of 10.

Premier sponsor is Lowell Five. Major sponsors are Market Basket, Align Credit Union, Pentucket Medical, Insurance Solutions Corporation, Haverhill Bank, and DL Technology LLC.

Award-winning author to speak: The Northern Essex Community College White Fund series will host a lecture by award-winning author and cultural activist Raquel Cepeda on March 6 from 8:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Lawrence High School, 70-72 North Parish Road, Lawrence.

Admission is free.

During the event, titled “Debunking and Redefining the ‘American Dream’ in Bird of Paradise: How I Became Latina,” Cepeda will discuss her coming of age in New York City and Santo Domingo, as well as the process of uncovering and exploring her ancestry and what it means to be Latino today.

Cepeda, an award-winning journalist, cultural activist, and documentary filmmaker, directed and produced “Bling: A Planet Rock,” a critically acclaimed documentary about American hip-hop culture’s obsession with diamonds. She is working on “Deconstructing Latina,” a documentary about a group of troubled teenage girls in a suicide prevention program.
