News in brief: Weekend events

Free holiday concert at Winnekenni Castle Sunday

Winnekenni Castle will hold a free holiday family concert Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. Music Maximus will ring in the holidays with children's music, traditional, seasonal and holiday music, including sing-a-longs. There will be a freewill offering to benefit Emmaus Inc. Refreshments will be available. This concert is sponsored in part by a grant from the Haverhill Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Church to hold bean supper Saturday

St. James Episcopal Church in Groveland will hold a bean supper Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12. The church is at 119 Washington St. For more information call 978-373-1270.

Winter dance performances at NECC

Northern Essex Community College's annual winter student dance performance, titled "Momentum," is Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sport and Fitness Center on the Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St. Tickets, at the door, are $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and $3 for children under 12. Students in the Dance Composition II class created a piece titled "Time Must Go On" that is choreographed by students Kaite Harrison, Meghan Hatfield, Justin Messina, Danielle Perrier, and Kadee Tapley. This dance portrays the personal journey that each of the students is on as well as obstacles they have overcome. Northern Essex Dance Coordinator Michelle Deane's high energy hip-hop piece, titled "Last Dayz," depicts the high school experience of a prep school and the final days of school ending before summer.

All Saints Parish dinner is Saturday

All Saints Parish will be hold a roast pork dinner Saturday in the church hall after the 4 p.m. Mass. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Family, friends and fellow parishioners are invited. For more information call 978-372-2901.

St. Joseph School to hold Christmas carnival and fair

St. Joseph School of All Saints Parish will hold its annual family Christmas carnival and craft fair Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school's gymnasium at 56 Oak Terrace. This festive holiday event, which is open to the public, is presented by the school's PTO and features games, prizes, many raffle baskets, face painting, a sweet shop, food, various crafts and a visit by Santa. NECC chorus to present winter concert Sunday

Pop music, contemporary works, a spiritual, an African gathering song, and music from the middle ages will all be featured during the Northern Essex Community College Winter Chorus Concert Sunday at 2 p.m. in the David Hartleb Technology Center on the Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St. "This annual event really offers something for everyone," said Alisa Bucchiere, NECC chorus director. The group will perform the works of contemporary composers Anders Edenroth and Morten Lauridsen, a spiritual by Moses Hogan, a traditional African gathering song, works from the middle ages by Praetorius, the Hallelujah Chorus by Handel, and a popular song from the recent past. Pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee's

The Crowell Elementary School will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Applebee's Restaurant in Haverhill. The event includes raffles for gift baskets. Proceeds will go to the purchase of gym equipment and repairs to the school's playground.

Workshop on living with loss is Dec. 8

Merrimack Valley Hospice is offering a one day workshop on living with loss Dec. 8 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the East Kingston Library, 47 Maplevale Road, East Kingston, NH. This special workshop will cover many aspects of loss and will be facilitated by Nancy Thornton, a grief counselor with Merrimack Valley Hospice. The workshop is free and open to the public.
