Community events

(Continued)

Cycle for Shelter: The 24th annual Cycle for Shelter is July 22, rain or shine. All rides begin on the campus of Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. Cycle for Shelter, a fundraiser for Emmaus Inc., helps the local nonprofit organization provide emergency shelter, long-term affordable housing and services to as many as 200 men, women and children each day. Those services include meals, job and education training, and referrals to other services, such as substance abuse programs. This year's event features four rides, including a 24-mile "weekend warrior" route for novice cyclists. More than 2,500 homeless adults and children will seek help from Emmaus this year as they face homelessness. Riders are asked to raise a minimum of $200. Registration fee is $85 from April 16 to July 13 and $100 on the day of the event, if space is available. Please inquire about family registrations for riders under the age of 18. More information is available online at emmausinc.org or by calling Terri Rousseau at 978-241-3425.

Spinners tickets through Council of Aging: The city's Recreation Department and Council on Aging has tickets to the Lowell Spinners game on July 30 at 7 p.m. Grandparents will receive a complimentary hot dog and soda from the Lowell Spinners. Transportation is not included. More information is available from Kathy Bresnahan or Rita LaBella at 978-374-2390 or kbresnahan@cityofhaverhill.com.

Summer Reading: The public library is offering summer reading programs for kids, teens and adults this summer. All programs run online through Sept. 1. To participate set up a free account at readsinma.org/haverhill. Children entering kindergarten through grade 5 can participate in "Dream Big, Read!" by tracking the number of hours read. Kids can win a Topsfield Fair prize package by reading 25 hours by Aug. 4. Completing the program with 40 hours earns kids a free book.
