Summer Music Festival: Northern Essex Community College's music program is offering a week-long Summer Music Festival for pianists, violinists and cellists of all musical levels, Aug. 6 through 10 on the Haverhill campus. Open to musicians ages 10 and older, the program will focus on solo and chamber repertoire, technique, and fundamental music theory, all in relation to their historical context. The cost is $275 per person, plus a $25 registration fee. Students will receive individual lessons and chamber music coaching during the morning session, and master classes in the afternoon. A free performance of the works studied by the participants is Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Hartleb Technology Center. This festival will be directed by NECC Music Program faculty member Christina Dietrich. Guest artists include violinist Alice Hallstrom, cellist Caroline Reiner-Williams and pianist Michael Kramer. Dietrich will meet with each student prior to the start of the workshop for proper placement. Assessment interviews are June 25 and 26. Library Summer Reading: Teens entering grades 6 through 12 can participate in "Own the Night" by logging titles read. The Friends of the Haverhill Public Library will donate $1 to the Haverhill Gazette Santa Fund for each title, and an additional dollar for charity for each book review written. Adults ages 18 and up can participate in "Between the Covers" by logging titles read. Any adult who reads 10 titles in 10 weeks wins a free book. For more information visit haverhillpl.org. A number of activities to celebrate the theme of each summer reading program are listed in the library's calendar of events. Events for teens this summer include a model rocket building workshop and launch, a visit from a ghost hunter, a lunchtime cooking demonstration and a zombie makeup workshop.
