Fans of last year's Downtown Penguin Pub Crawl during the annual Downtown Haverhill Christmas Stroll will soon have another reason to feel jolly this year, as the popular event will return for an encore this year which organizers claim to be bigger and better than before.
The second Annual Downtown Penguin Pub Crawl, on Friday, Dec. 3, will now offer barflies a choice between individual or team crawls.
From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., participants must visit any number of these pubs and patronize their business to accrue "penguin points" for entries in raffles with valuable prizes like restaurant gift certificates and prize packages.
This year's event boasts 13 downtown pubs participating in the crawl including Toma's, Chit Chat Lounge and J.P. McBride's alongside many others.
Individuals must earn at least four points to take part in the raffle while groups need 20 points. Purchasing a drink, either alcoholic or non-alcoholic, or ordering $10 worth of food will count as a point.
The new team division gives groups of five a chance to compete for exclusive raffle prizes and entitles registered teams to a unique gift basket containing Penguin Pub Crawl shirts, mugs and more.
Groups interested in taking part should act quickly, however, as the team division is open only to the first 20 registered teams. In addition, group registrations cost $100 but proceeds from the registration will go toward the local charity Ozzie's Kids.
As with last year, the individual pub crawls are still free and open to anyone in the public over the age of 21. Registration sheets are available at any of the participating pubs and the day of the event.
Closing ceremonies, and raffle drawings, will take place at the Garibaldi Club at 9 p.m.
Bucky Tardif, co-chair of the crawl, said the event last year drew more than 400 people.
