Youth Academy: The Essex County Sheriff's Department will host a Youth Academy for children ages 12 to 15 and a Junior Leadership Academy for children ages 8 to 11. Both programs are free and will be offered to communities in the region, including Haverhill, July 9 to 13; Lawrence, July 30 to Aug. 3, and Methuen, Aug. 20 to 24. While the Junior Leadership Academies in Beverly and Masconomet are full, enrollment is still open in all of the other academies. The program runs weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children will tour the Essex County correctional facility, and will participate in Laser Quest, archery, the new ropes course at Essex Agricultural School, a fishing trip, a class with the Essex County District Attorney's Office, a K-9 demonstration, a cookout/graduation and more. Activities for the Junior Leadership Academy will include indoor rock climbing, Curious Creatures, a fishing trip, Jump On In, bowling, a K-9 demonstration, a cookout/graduation and more. Sheriff Frank G. Cousins Jr. and his staff are providing a program that gets young people off the streets for a week, and allows them to experience a fun, educational and safe program. Road Race: The Haverhill YMCA and the YMCA of the North Shore will present the David Curley 5K Memorial Road Race "Be a Champion" July 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Stadium on Lincoln Avenue. Registration fee is $10. Free T-shirts to the first 225 to register. Registration is free for children ages 13 and under.
