Annual canoe race prepares to launch

The 36th annual Lou Marcel Canoe Race to benefit the Special Olympics will be held on June 7 starting at 8 a.m.

The race is an eight-mile voyage along the Merrimack River beginning in Lawrence and ending in Haverhill. This year’s theme is “Pirates of the Merrimack River.”

All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Massachusetts North Section. A celebration at the Crescent Yacht Club in Bradford follows the race.

There, participants will enjoy food, beverages, live music by Blue Moon and awards for the best costume. Charles River Canoe and Kayak canoe/kayak rentals will be delivered to the starting line in Lawrence and retrieved at the Crescent Yacht Club for a $55 fee. Online reservations are required for all canoe/kayak rentals at www.canoerace.org, where details about the race can be found.
