Community events

(Continued)

Cycle for Shelter: The 24th annual Cycle for Shelter is July 22, rain or shine. All rides begin on the campus of Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. Cycle for Shelter, a fundraiser for Emmaus Inc., helps the local nonprofit organization provide emergency shelter, long-term affordable housing and services to as many as 200 men, women and children each day. Those services include meals, job and education training, and referrals to other services, such as substance abuse programs. This year's event features four rides, including a 24-mile "weekend warrior" route for novice cyclists. More than 2,500 homeless adults and children will seek help from Emmaus this year as they face homelessness. Riders are asked to raise a minimum of $200. Registration fee is $85 from April 16 to July 13 and $100 on the day of the event, if space is available. Please inquire about family registrations for riders under the age of 18. More information is available online at emmausinc.org or by calling Terri Rousseau at 978-241-3425.

Youth Academy: The Essex County Sheriff's Department will host a Youth Academy for children ages 12 to 15 and a Junior Leadership Academy for children ages 8 to 11. Both programs are free and will be offered to communities in the region, including Haverhill, July 9 to 13; Lawrence, July 30 to Aug. 3, and Methuen, Aug. 20 to 24. The program runs weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children will tour the Essex County correctional facility, and will participate in Laser Quest, archery, the new ropes course at Essex Agricultural School, a fishing trip, a class with the Essex County District Attorney's Office, a K-9 demonstration, a cookout/graduation and more. Activities for the Junior Leadership Academy will include indoor rock climbing, Curious Creatures, a fishing trip, Jump On In, bowling, a K-9 demonstration, a cookout/graduation and more. Sheriff Frank G. Cousins Jr. and his staff are providing a program that gets young people off the streets for a week, and allows them to experience a fun, educational and safe program. A variety of agencies have partnered with the sheriff's office to provide this program. For more information including an application, schedule and photos visit mass.gov/essexsheriff/community.
