Singer with Haverhill roots performs Friday night in Rockport


Haverhill favorite Jon Shain performs Friday, Aug. 13, at Rockport's Old Sloop Coffeehouse in the First Congregational Church at 12 School St.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Rockport church.

Shain makes his home in North Carolina, but grew up in Haverhill.

He was a finalist at the 2009 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn.. He won North Carolina's Indy Award for Best Folk Act in 2006. His latest CD, "Times Right Now," has been receiving national airplay. "Shain combines explosive acoustic blues guitar-playing with well-crafted songs full of colorful characters and images from the great American Road," according to a news release. He learned about playing the blues at the side of Big Boy Henry. Shain, touring with his acoustic trio, is drawn to other influences, "from bluegrass to bossa nova," all which find their way into his music. The suggested contribution is $10 for adults and $5 for those under 18 or over 65, with a family maximum of $20.
