State Senator Steven Baddour (D-Methuen) was named vice chairman of the Senate's Ways and Means Committee last night.
The Ways and Means Committee writes the state's yearly budget, and reports on all legislation that has any fiscal impact on the Commonwealth.
Baddour, who was elected to serve the First Essex District in 2002, will serve directly under Chairman Stephen Brewer (D-Barre), who will lead the budget-writing panel through the 2012 budget season.
"It's going to be very difficult," Baddour said. "Probably the most difficult budget in my tenure. It's an opportunity to change the way government operates, and hopefully we can do some things that we haven't been able to do in the past. I'm looking forward to the challenge."
