State Rep. Brian Dempsey, D-Haverhill, was named chairman of the influential House Ways and Means Committee earlier today.
The House Ways and Means Committee deals with all legislation impacting the state's finances and drafts the House version of the state's budget annually.
Dempsey, 44, who was elected to the House in 1990 representing the 3rd Essex District, was the chairman of the House Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies during his 2008 term.
Burlington Democrat Charley Murphy was the previous chairman of the committee, elected in 2009.
