MVH hires bilingual surgeon

Merrimack Valley Hospital has hired a bilingual general surgeon, Dr. Edwin Menor.

Menor, originally from South America, is bilingual in Spanish and English. He was medically and surgically trained in the United States.

Menor performs all general surgery procedures, and has a special interest in minimally invasive procedures. Minimally invasive procedures are done with smaller incisions, which generally means less pain and faster recovery times for patients.

"Dr. Edwin S. Menor will be a welcome addition to our medical staff, and he will be located in the medical office building on the hospital campus," said Merrimack Valley Hospital CEO Michael Collins.

Menor's focus is on patient education. He spends time informing patients about their conditions, explains surgical choices, and enlists their participation in pre- and post-surgical options for rapid recovery, Collins said.

"I love my patients and treat them with respect and dignity. As a surgeon, my job is to prolong and improve their quality of life. Surgical care should be available worldwide to everyone in need," Menor said.

A compassionate surgeon, Menor goes on mission trips to perform pro bono surgeries for indigent patients both in the United States and third-world countries. His most recent surgical mission trip was to his home country of Peru.

Menor earned his medical degree from Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, Neb. He completed his internship and surgical residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York in 2003, and trained with one of the pioneers of advanced laparoscopic surgery, Dr. James "Butch" Rosser from Yale University, at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.

Menor is a member of the Society of American Endoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgeons, the National Hispanic Mentor Recruitment Network, and the Peruvian-American Medical Society.

Menor began his practice at Merrimack Valley Surgical Specialties on Aug. 1.
