Northern Essex Community College is offering local unemployed workers the opportunity to take two free, three-credit computer-literacy courses to be offered at NECC's Lawrence location.
The first course, Computer for Beginners, will be taught on Thursday evenings, starting on Sept. 9. It is an introductory class, and will provide an overview of the Windows operating system, file management, word processing, e-mail, web browsing and search engines.
"Many laid-off workers are being held back in their job searches because of a lack of computer experience," said Chuck Phair, assistant dean for arts, business, communications and technology. "These free courses will help them upgrade their computer skills, giving them the tools to find and land a job."
The second course, Computer Applications, introduces applications in graphics, spreadsheets, database management and expands on word processing and operating systems.
Last spring, NECC offered the same two classes, and 50 local residents participated, with 10 moving along to this semester's class.
Charles Diggs, NECC's director of enrollment services, is working with the Valley Works Career Center to recruit.
"We're looking for displaced workers, department of transition clients, displaced homemakers and veterans," Diggs said.
English literacy is required.
Those interested in participating should contact Diggs at 978-556-3608 or e-mail cdiggs@necc.mass.edu.
