Ski company moves to the city

From Mount McKinley in Alaska to Mont Blanc in France, the entire sport of skiing will soon know of Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Swix Sport USA, a Norway-based company which manufactures ski wax, poles and other skiing necessities, has relocated its United States operations from Wilmington to 60 Newark Street in Haverhill.

This new location will use 50,000 square feet of space in existing buildings for distribution operations. A new 10,000-square-foot building is also under construction in a lot adjacent to the Newark Street location and will host the majority of the company's administrative operations.

The new building will also be home to the official Swix outlet store when completed this fall.

Swix had originally considered moving to Dover, N.H., but instead chose Haverhill after city officials made offers Swix just couldn't refuse.

"Working with the town has been a joy," said Pete Dahl, controller for Swix USA.

Company President Steven Poulin said a major change in his decision came after speaking with Matthew Simpson of Pedro's, a bicycle accessory manufacturer. Simpson urged Poulin to consider Haverhill since the city's departments and the Fiorentini administration proved receptive to new, alternative businesses.

Mayor James Fiorentini, who had mentioned Swix's plan to move into the city last March, said he was happy to hear the business community is spreading positive news about working in Haverhill and hopes to attract more offbeat ventures.

"They're thrilled with working with us," Fiorentini said. "They're going to be our ambassadors."

Poulin said Swix is in talks to acquire two more skiing supply companies in the near future. If successful, he said, the company will likely expand its workforce.

"We have room for another 12 to 15 employees," he said.

During the winter months, Swix will hire for temporary positions region-wide to help fill their large number of orders.

Other, more off-beat, expansions planned for the company include converting some surrounding marshland around the plant to a half-mile cross country ski trail.

Swix celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce on June 27.
