Things to See and Do
Summer events at Haverhill Public Library
This year's summer library adventure for kids and teens is called Find Out What's Out There at Your Library.
At the start of July, participants will receive a Find Out What's Out There punch card. For every program they take part in, the card will be punched. When full, participants' names will be entered for raffle prizes to be drawn at the Summer Reading Finale Party.
Where required, registration opens July 1.
Here are the programs planned this summer:
Photography Workshop
July: 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Want to learn the nuts and bolts of photography? This five-week workshop will include instruction on basic photography skills and simple photo editing. Workshop participants will walk around Haverhill taking pictures, so a signed parental permission slip is required. The series will culminate in an exhibit at the library during August. Open to Haverhill residents entering grades five through 12 in the fall. Registration is required along with a signed parental permission slip.
Gaming Afternoons
July 7 and 28, Aug. 11 and 19
Enjoy Rock Band, DDR, and Guitar Hero. Open to Haverhill residents entering grades five through 12. No registration required.
Cooking with Katie
July 30, 6 to 8 p.m.
Join professional chef Katie Wilton and learn to make easy snacks and meals. Open to Haverhill residents ages 10 to 15. Registration is required.
Jewelry Workshop
Aug. 14, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Make memory wire jewelry. Open to Haverhill residents entering grades five through 12. Materials provided free. Registration is required.
Make Ice Cream
July 22 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Stop by the teen area and learn how to make ice cream in a plastic bag.
Babysitting Course
Aug. 18, 19 and 20, 2:30 to 5 p.m.
Three day babysitting certification course teaches necessary skills, Participants receive certificate from Beverly Hospital. Open to Haverhill residents 11 and older. There is a $25 fee per participant, the Library will cover $10, and the remaining $15 is due at registration.
Teen Knitting Club
July 17, Aug. 18, 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Experienced knitters, beginners and those wishing to learn are welcome.¬ Open to teens entering grades five through 12. Registration is preferred.
Book Discussion Group
July 8 and Aug. 12, 2 to 3:30 p.m.
Snacks and a lively discussion of some of the Best Books for Young Adults 2010 nominees. First meeting does not have a required book; participants can read one of the nominated books, found at www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists/bbya under Current Nominations. Titles for August will be determined at the July meeting.
Ongoing activities
Greeting Cards: Stop by the teen area and make a greeting card to send to area nursing homes or service men and women abroad.
Food Drive: Bring in nonperishable food that will be donated to area food pantries.
Board Games: Bored? Need a place to get out of the sun? Stop by the Teen area.
