Sand and Sea Festival revives Salisbury Beach of old

From live entertainment to fireworks displays over the ocean, the third annual Sand & Sea Festival beginning Friday, June 26, at Salisbury Beach offers something for everyone.

The festival highlights many fun, seaside recreational uses of Salisbury's 4-mile shoreline by showcasing on-the-beach activities such as the Toyota US MotoSurf Sea Doo Races, beach yoga and surfing.

On the sand side, there will be activities such as live entertainment on a beachfront stage, amusement rides, kids performers, marine aquatic programming and a fireworks show.

Two Haverhill boys, Wolfgang Burger, 7, and Nick Calnan, 11, will perform live with their band, the Black Diamonds, on the beachfront stage on Saturday, June 27, at noon.

Wolfgang has played bass guitar for six months and Nick has played drums for less than a year. The other band members are Henry McIntyre, 9, of Groveland who plays guitar and AJ Marks, 11, from Boxford who is the lead vocalist.

The band has been playing together since January and is part of the DeAngelis Studio Rock School Program in Haverhill. Those old enough to remember a time when Salisbury Center was filled with amusement park rides will enjoy the return of some of the familiar Pirate's Fun Park attractions for kids and teens.

The festival will be at Salisbury Beach Center, marked by the intersections of Broadway and Oceanfront South, and is easily accessible from Routes 1, 95 and 495. Many activities also take place on the beach at the top of Broadway.

Festival hours are Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with the fireworks show from 10 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Sunday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission is free.

There is a small fee for some activities.

Ample parking is available nearby. For information, visit www.beachfests.org or call the Summer in Salisbury hot line at 978-462-7274.
