Religion Roundup: Second Baptist Church plans bean supper

Open Hand food pantry: Catholic Charities sponsors the local food pantry for the needy. The pantry is housed at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Monument Square. Plastic containers will be at the back of the church for donations of nonperishable food.

150th anniversary news: St. James Parish's 150th anniversary celebration Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Sean O'Malley on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m., with dinner at the Atkinson Country Club following Mass. Reservations are required. Tickets are $27 for adults and $15 for children under 13, and will go on sale August 15.

First Church of Christ, Bradford

Treasures on the Common: The church is holding a giant community yard sale fundraiser on the Bradford Common on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with rain date on the following Saturday. Spaces can be rented for $10, or $15 with an 8-foot table. Items can also be donated to the sale.

Concerts on the common: The summer music series will be held Friday evenings this year through Aug. 21: July 31, Peter Chase-Still Breathing Blues; Aug. 7, Chad Verbeck and Rock Springs Band; Aug. 14, Paul Prue and The Hayden Boys, Do-Wop All Stars opening; and Aug. 21, The Kickers Band. In case of rain, the concerts will be held inside the church.

Worship and Sunday School are every Sunday at 10 a.m. A fellowship hour with refreshments is offered following worship. The church is handicap accessible and provides large print worship bulletins and hearing assistance devices.

Pantry collection Sundays: The first Sunday of each month nonperishable food items, health and beauty items and paper products can be brought to the church for distribution to food pantries.

Book fundraiser: The church is raising money through the collection of new and used books, videos, CD's, DVD's and audio books. Donations may be dropped off in the gray container in the back parking lot of the church. No encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers and catalogues please. The church will be paid for items collected and all raised will benefit the general fund of the church. Many collected books will be donated to schools, libraries, sent overseas to the troops and sold in book sales to benefit local nonprofit groups.

Recycling event: A cans, bottles and paper recycling event will held on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Prayer shawl ministry: Will meet beginning in September at the church in the Ladies' Parlor from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Yarn is supplied, bring own knitting/crochet supplies. Contributions for the purchase of yarn are greatly appreciated.

Island Pond Baptist

Adult Bible Fellowship classes and children's Sunday school classes meet every Sunday at 9 a.m., followed by coffee and fellowship at 10:15 a.m.

Worship is Sunday at 10:30 a.m., with a special children's church service available for children in grades 1 to 4, led by the Rev. James Wells with a rich selection of praise music and hymns. An evening service is at 6 p.m.

Higher Standard youth group, for grades six to 12, meets Wednesday evenings.
