Unitarian Church talent show Saturday

On Saturday members of Universalist Unitarian Church will display their talent — or lack thereof — during the church's first talent/ no talent show.

Talents of all genres are welcome from singing to dancing, musucal instruments, poetry readings and more.

"We put 'no talent' in the title because we want to encourage people who don't think they have talent to participate," said church member Daniel Wilson, who helped plan the event. The main reason for having the show is fellowship and fun, he said.

"We are bringing activities and fun to the church, and encouraging everyone to participate" said church member Scott Rogers, who helped plan the show and will participate. Rogers will play the acoustic guitar and sing "That's the Way" by Led Zeppelin.

Rogers and Wilson are members of the band Joy! — which offers an alternative source of music to the church congregation. The group itself will not perform, but individual members will perform solo or accompany others.

"Its more contemporary than the choir, but we keep a spiritual theme. Sometimes we take a contemporary song and change it a little to make it more spiritual." said Rogers.

Rogers, Wilson and fellow church members Marie and Irma Carew created the show, and finding people to perform in it has not been a challenge — 15 have already returned their sign up sheets and commitments to perform.

Rogers said a lot of children are participating and he thinks they will draw a large audience because their families will want to see them perform.

"I think this will be just the family event we are hoping for" said Rogers. "Its something outside normal church activities and fun for all ages,"

If the event is a success, Rogers hopes the church will host another show next year.

"We are hoping this is the first annual show," said Rogers, adding that the public is welcome to watch, but only church members can perform. She show starts at 4 p.m. at the church in Monument Squsare, 15 Kenoza Ave.
