Local family hosts fundraiser for hospice

A Haverhill family was so touched by the end-of-life services their father, Richard Barker, received during the winter of 2007 from Merrimack Valley Hospice, they wanted to do something to give back. For the second year, the Barker family hosted a barbecue to raise money for the organization.

Beth Torla and Constance Barker, Richard's daughter and wife, respectively, hosted a Barbecue Birthday Party on Sunday, June 14, at the Berkely Club in Lawrence in his memory. The event featured food, raffles, prizes and DJ entertainment. Money was raised through a $10 suggested donation per person and a raffle. The family was able to raise $3,570 to benefit patient care at Merrimack Valley Hospice.

"When families make the effort to raise money for our hospice services it is truly amazing," said Joan Stygles Hull, president of the Home Health Foundation Family of Agencies. "We are proud of the services we provided the Barker family and honored that they felt compelled to help us continue this work for others."

"We can't say enough about the care Richard and our family received from Merrimack Valley Hospice," said Constance Barker. "It meant so much to us, and he really connected with many of the nurses who cared for him. We are so thankful and this is one way we can give back."

Golf tournament raises $60,000 for All Care

All Care VNA & Hospice's annual Charity Golf Open on June 16 at Gannon Golf Course in Lynn raised more than $60,000. Proceeds from the event will benefit All Care Hospice patients by providing compassionate medical, emotional and spiritual care, and bereavement support for their families, regardless of one's ability to pay. Proceeds will also benefit All Care Hospice's bereavement support groups, Bridge to Hospice program, volunteer training classes, and community outreach and education.

"Cloudy skies and an occasional shower didn't dampen the spirits of our golfers who 'made their mark' for All Care Hospice," said Justine Chamberline, All Care's Director of Development. "We greatly appreciate our returning sponsors and were pleased to welcome many new faces this year. With our participants' generous support and the dedication of our volunteers, we experienced another successful event."

New England Copy Specialists, Salem Five Charitable Foundation, Willow Laboratories; All Carts Sponsor: Byram Healthcare; Lunch Sponsor: Feeley & Driscoll; Hole-in-One Sponsor: Farquhar & Black Insurance were underwriters for the event.
