Bands battle for bragging rights

From staff reports

The votes have been counted and the lineup for the 2008 Haverhill Rocks 2008 on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Performances begin at 1 p.m. with Plugg, followed by Furious George, Elyson, The Derelicts, Hysteria, Project 57, Mongrel and the 2007 champs, TripMynd.

To end the day, Grammy Award winner and blues legend Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson will perform.

To win a spot to perform on Saturday, several bands' performances were shown on TV22, the Haverhill Community Television local-access channel. Viewers voted for their favorites and the top eight made the list.

Doors open at noon.

General admission tickets are $10 and are available at HaverhillRocks.com or at FYE stores. A limited number of VIP passes are available for $50 on HaverhillRocks.com. In addition to reserved parking and seating, VIP pass holders are invited to a meet-and-greet with Johnson after the show.

Johnson is expected to perform around 6 p.m. — after the winner of the Battle of the Bands is announced. The winning band will receive a $1,000 check, donated by Trinity EMS, and a music video recording session donated by ABE Multimedia of Haverhill.

The Haverhill Rocks committee is an all-volunteer group whose goal is raising the profile of Haverhill's diverse musical community. The committee is working with the city, the Winnekenni Foundation and Haverhill Community Television to produce the event.

About 1,500 people attended last year's concert, which ended with a performance by Elliott Yamin, a former "American Idol" finalist.
