Academic Achievers, published July 30
Sarah Dallon and Meghan O'Rorke graduated from Roger Williams University during the university's commencement exercises held on Saturday, May 23.
Benjamin Gostanian and Husam Al-Ziab were named to the Champlain College dean's list for the spring semester. The dean's list requires a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or more.
Thomas J. Tenney graduated from Western New England College with a Juris Doctor degree on Saturday, May 16.
These Haverhill students were named to the University of Massachusetts Lowell dean's list for the spring semester: Ryan Brodie, Andrew Capua, Toni Coleman, Rachael Comeau, Myles Costello, William Drayton, Steven Elia, Michael English, Jill Gentz, Richard Lescarbeau and Colleen Lynch.
Also, Eric Maher, David Mandel, Andrew Murrin, Tiffany Roberts, Ashley Warcewicz, Thomas White, Carrie Barnhart, Jonathan Bocanegra, Lynn Caldwell, Rachel Carnes, Stacy Crowley, Jill Cunningham, Darcy Fournier, Thomas Kennedy, Matthew Killam, Jonathan Lemerise, Russell Littlefield and Yuguan Liu.
Also, Michael McCarthy, Matthew Migliori, David Rule, Ahmad Sarabi, Andrew Sheehan, David Tang, Gerard Wilson, Alexander Zalewski, Aaron Capitao, Christopher Caron, Steven Cunningham, Jamie Davidowicz, Juliana Fotino and Christopher Hardy.
Also, Zaki Jaber, Fady Kantara, Gwendolyn Kearns, Tiffany Kothman, Matthew LaRivee, Roy McKinney, Joel Nemr, Mallory Parker and Steven Silva.
Matthew Killam of Haverhill graduated with honors from University of Massachusetts Lowell on May 30, 2009, with a 4.0 grade point average and a bachelor degree in science mathematics. He will continue his education in the master program at UMass Lowell, where he already has a 4.0 grade point average in two master classes from the spring semester.
Marissa Killam of Haverhill graduated from Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School on May 28, 2009. She will pursue her interest in early child care education at Northern Essex Community College where she hopes to obtain her associate's degree.
Caroline Boland, daughter of Joe and Susan Boland of Bradford, graduated from Fairfield University on May 17, 2009. Boland, a mathematics major, was named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester. To be selected for the dean's list, a student must attain a grade point average of at least 3.5.
James Buckley, son of James and Monica Buckley of Haverhill, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in finance from Boston College. He will begin employment in December 2009 with Grant Thornton LLP, an international accounting and management consulting firm in Boston.
Katrina Degel was named to the Berklee College of Music dean's list for the spring 2009 semester. To be selected for the dean's list, a student must attain a grade point average of at least 3.4.
These Haverhill students were named to the president's list at Merrimack College: Laura DeVincent, Amanda El-Hashem, Jefferson Welch, Amanda Wakim and Laura Duffy. To be selected for the president's list, a student must attain a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
These Haverhill students were named to the dean's list at Merrimack College: Gregory Basmajian, Elizabeth Ferrante, Kathleen Fitzmeyer, Melissa Lovato, Ashley Shaheen, Eileen True, Jaclyn Vander Mass, Michael Pelosi, Anthony Simonelli, Leigha Connolly, Christina Danehy, Peter Early, Amanda Premont and Colleen Sorenson. To be selected for the dean's list, a student must attain a grade point average of at least 3.25.
These Haverhill students were named to the fourth quarter honor roll at St. John's Preparatory School: Kevin Lynch, Ethan Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Edward McGuiggan, Paul MacMullin and Kyle Parsons.

Ted's for Tires lot closes Tuesday; Parking garage construction to start soon
As part of the construction of the new Downtown Parking Garage in Railroad Square, the former 'Ted's for Tires' lot will be closed permanently on Tuesday, Aug. 3, as of 7 a.m.

Mayor James Fiorentini said the move marks the beginning of site preparation for the Downtown Parking Garage construction project, which is expected to start in August. A formal groundbreaking will soon be scheduled on the 315-space, 5-story parking structure. -
Councilors: Hands off water fees
Three city councilors say they want to protect residents who use — and pay for — municipal water and wastewater from shouldering an unfair burden of the overall city budget.

City Councilors William Macek, Michael Young, and William Ryan say an enterprise fund for the Water and Wastewater departments would stop the fees from being diverted when other city departments' budgets run dry. -
Downtown businesses win hearing, but likely will lose trash pickup
Downtown businesses have won a chance to be heard about changes in city trash regulations that will take away municipal rubbish collection.
