August events at public library: The public library is offering a variety of events in August. Here are the dates, times and details:

Local author Edith Maxwell will talk about her new book "A Tine to Live, A Tine to Die," the first book in a new cozy mystery series, on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Milhendler Room. All are welcome to drop in for this Adult Summer Reading Social event.

Marcy Yeager will discuss tips and tricks for making the most of your international travel in this International Travel 101 presentation on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Johnson Auditorium. Yeager is coordinator of the international studies program at Northern Essex Community College.

Author and Haverhill native Dave Goudsward will share his new book tracing HP Lovecraft’s ties to the Merrimack Valley on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Milhendler Room. Lovecraft, a world renowned horror writer, had deep ties to the Merrimack Valley and even incorporated the area into some of his most famous stories. All are welcome at this Adult Summer Reading Social event.

Lobster/chicken lunch offered: The Council on Aging and Northern Essex Comunity College’s Life Long Learning program will hold a summer lobster/chicken party on Aug. 15 at the Hartleb Technology Center on NECC’s Haverhill campus.

Doors open at noon.

Tickets are $25 for lobster and $15 for chicken. The meal includes chowder, corn on the cob, garden salad, baked potato with sour cream, refreshments and watermelon. Rockfest at Winnekenni Castle: The Boston band "Leaving Eden" in conjunction with former pro-wrestler Steve Chamberland of the 50 Legs Foundation will present Leaving Eden Rockfest 2013 on Aug. 17 at Winnekenni Castle.
