Skating lessons raise food, money for hungry people

By Alex Lippa

They skated their way to feeding hungry people.

The Ice Skating Academy of Atkinson hosted a free public skate and fundraiser for Somebody Cares New England at Haverhill's Veterans Memorial Ice Rink last month.

The event was held in honor of January being National Ice Skating Month. The event started with a skating presentation and then a public skate where professionals from the Ice Skating Academy offered free guidance to anyone skating that day.

More than 100 food items and $50 in cash were received and donated to Somebody Cares New England, a non-profit organization which works to prevent hunger in the region.

More than 120 skaters attended the event, which was run by Jill Pignatiello and Gillian Bannon of the Ice Skating Academy.
