Boys volleyball first to qualify for playoffs
The most successful team at Haverhill High School over the past three years has been the boys volleyball program. Coming into this year, the Hillies had gone 40-3 over the previous two seasons, with back-to-back Merrimack Valley Conference titles. They have returned to that winning form as of late, and are the first Hillie team to qualify for post-season play this spring. The boys have won six straight matches, including a 3-2 victory over Lowell last Friday, to improve to 9-4. They close out the regular season on Monday against Andover.
Track teams perform well at Weston Twilight Meet
Coming off wins over Chelmsford, the boys and girls track teams sent several student athletes to the Weston Twilight Meet on Saturday. Riley Gilmore (fourth in the 2-mile run), Erin Connolly (fifth in the 200-meter dash), and Jackie Solimine (sixth in the 1-mile run) had strong performances for the girls team. For the boys, Alex Mahew had the top time in the preliminaries and went on to place third in the 100-meter dash.
Lacrosse teams prepare for important games
Kristy Robertson scored 11 goals, but the girls lacrosse team came up just short, falling to Methuen 22-21 last week. The Hillies head into the second half of the season with a 5-5 record. The boys lacrosse team also lost a tight game last week, falling to Central Catholic 6-5. The Hillies are 3-5, with an important stretch of games coming up.
Softball team on a winning streak
The softball team has won two of its last three games, including a 22-10 league win over Lawrence. The Hillies will host Pentucket on Thursday afternoon at Riverside Park. The baseball team had a four-game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss to North Andover. The baseball team will also be home on Thursday afternoon, hosting Lawrence at 4:30 p.m.
