Haverhill Idol auditions scheduled

Do you have the kind of singing voice that makes people turn their heads and smile?

If you do, the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce invites you to audition for Haverhill Idol, a popular singing competition that is part of the city’s annual KidsFEST event.

Each year, hundreds of local students audition for their chance to be recognized as a Haverhill Idol champion and be awarded the title of “Best Shoe City Singer.”

The competition attracts many talented and gifted singers from the region. Last year’s winners, Megan Mooney (Senior Idol) and Melissa Cepeda (Junior Idol) were declared “show-stopping firecrackers.”

“They rocked the stage and blew our judges away,” said Jennifer Connolly, head of the KidsFEST Committee.

Young people seeking to participate in Haverhill Idol can audition April 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or April 13 from noon to 5 p.m. at Haverhill Community Television, 60 Elm St. The auditions are being held in collaboration with Merrimack Valley Hospital and Trinity EMS.

Contestants will be asked to perform one song, without music, in front of a panel of judges consisting of members from the business and music communities. The competition is divided into two age groups: Junior Idol (students grades two to six) and Senior Idol (students in grades seven to 12). Ten participants — five Junior Idol finalists and five Senior Idol finalists — will pass through the audition phase and perform in front of a live audience of more than 15,000 people.

The top three winners of the Haverhill Idol Junior and Senior divisions will receive savings bonds donated by Pentucket Bank. In addition, Haverhill Idol first-place winners will be offered the chance to perform at the Christmas Stroll in December and again at KidsFEST 2014.

Applicants seeking to participate in Haverhill Idol must obtain the audition application, available on the chamber’s website. All applications must be submitted by April 11 and may be dropped off at the Haverhill Police Department, 40 Bailey Blvd. Applications may also be mailed to Paul Malone, c/o the Haverhill Police Department, 40 Bailey Blvd., Haverhill, MA 01830 or emailed to cop72@aol.com. A representative from the KidsFEST committee will notify applicants of their audition date and time.

KidsFEST 2013 will be May 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the upper level of the Merrimack Street parking deck. Rain date is May 19. Admission is free. To learn more about KidsFEST 2013 visit www.haverhillchamber.com.
