A blessing for their pets

Many pet owners say their dogs and cats, even their birds and fish are part of the family.

So why not give them a spiritual blessing, the kind a child might receive?

Several Haverhill churches did just that, when they had a Creation Care Event with a blessing of the animals at Portland Street playground.

The churches — St. James, Trinity, St. Gregory, Good Shepherd, The Salvation Army and the Vine — offered blessings to neighbors who brought their pets to the event.

The churches collected offerings for the MSPCA and handed out popsicles to children. Members of the Team Haverhill civic group solicited community input for the planned renovation of the playground, which has fallen into disrepair.
