Best catapult wins $60K scholarship

For the fourth consecutive year, high school juniors and seniors from across New England are encouraged to design and build a Trebuchet-style catapult for Merrimack College's Egg Catapult Competition on Saturday, March 20. Registration deadline is Sunday, Feb. 14.

Students are to create a catapult that can throw an egg into a frying pan up to 60 feet away. The prize is a $15,000 per year (maximum of four years) scholarship to study civil engineering at Merrimack College in Andover.

Patriots offer scholarships, too

The New England Patriots football team has launched its 2010 Write On Scholarship, which will give local students the opportunity to win up to $10,000 for college.

New England residents between the ages of 13 and 18 are eligible to enter the contest, which promotes creative writing and good citizenship through volunteerism.

Along with a creative essay about the most recent National Football League Patriots season, students will be asked to provide information about their volunteer experiences and why giving back to the community is important for people of all ages.

This spring, 28 students will be awarded a total of $60,000 in scholarships, with one $10,000 grand prize, a $7,500 runner-up prize, a $5,000 honorable mention prize, and 25 recognition prizes of $1,500.

The deadline to enter is March 31, 2010.

Certificate program in music offered at NECC

The Northern Essex Community College Music Program will offer a certificate program. Beginning in the fall semester, students will be able to pursue a Certificate in Music Technology. The one-year program helps students build and design an audio recording studio in their home or other suitable space. The program will include courses in audio recording techniques, the principles of sound design, and techniques of writing and recording music using current technology. Free dyslexia seminars offered

New England Dyslexia Solutions is offering free informational seminars, under the direction of Licensed Davis Dyslexia Correction Facilitator Karen LoGiudice on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and Thursday, April 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the organization's conference room at Boston North Technology Park, 110 Haverhill Road (Route 110), Amesbury. Summer Fair at Phillips Academy

Phillips Academy in Andover will host its 20th annual Summer Opportunity Fair on Sunday, Feb. 7, from noon until 2 p.m. in the Smith Center on the Andover campus. Admission is free to all at noon; academy students may begin to . The event will be open to PA students only at 11 a.m.

The fair gives students and their families a chance to meet with representatives from more than 80 local, national and international summer programs as well as gap-year programs.

Class of 1950 plans 60th reunion

The Haverhill High/Trade School Class of 1950 60-year reunion will be June 19 and 20 at the Haverhill Country Club. NECC offers environmentally friendly courses

Beginning with the spring semester, Northern Essex Community College students will be offered a series of green courses infused with an eco-friendly theme.

At least 15 percent of each course will be green focused and students will have the opportunity to either perform environmentally friendly service learning, develop a green project or present a green presentation.

Courses include Introduction to Biology II, Introduction to Business, Integrated Computer Applications, Green Technology, Environmental Issues and Statistics.

Some of the work in the spring courses will be showcased in a Green Open House sponsored by the college's Business, Math, Science and Technology Division, to be held in April.

Faculty and staff from throughout the college community have been working for more than a year regarding this issue. The college's aim is to begin to infuse content about environmental sustainability into as many of our courses as is appropriate.

NECC provides speakers

Nonprofit organizations, such as schools, community service clubs, and libraries, are invited to visit the Northern Essex Community College Speakers Bureau Web site where they can book speakers free of charge on over 70 different topics, ranging from "Why Vampires are Sexy" to "Did You Sleep Well Last Night."

Some of the general areas of interest include business and the workplace, communications, deaf culture, education, human services, health, science and travel, social Issues, technology, theatre, music, art, and literature.

The speakers are available through the NECC Marketing Communications department. Each speaker's availability depends upon his or her personal and professional schedules. Presentations vary in length, but most are approximately 30 minutes long followed by a brief question and answer period.

Appointments for school screenings

Haverhill schools provide free preschool screening to 3- and 4-year-old children in Haverhill. This brief look at a child's overall development includes the areas of language, motor skills, and thinking and reasoning skills. Screening is a brief, child-friendly, play-oriented time during which a trained preschool teacher will work with the child. The information gained from preschool screening may help answer some parents' questions and help make decisions about good learning experiences for your child. Beginner Internet classes offered at library

The Haverhill Public Library is offering beginner Internet classes with individual attention and hands-on practice.

You do not have to own a computer to participate but you are welcome to come with your own wireless enabled laptop.
