Boys basketball on a roll; ski race season begins

The Haverhill boys basketball team is on a bit of a roll. The Hillies have won four of their last five games, including an 83-57 win over Dracut on Friday night. Team defense has been a key to the latest streak as they have held opponents to an average of 45 points per game over that span. The Hillies have an important stretch of games coming up as they play four straight MVC games at home. They host Billerica Jan. 18, Lawrence Jan. 22, Chelmsford Jan. 29 and Tewksbury Feb. 1.

The hockey team followed up its first win of the year with a 2-2 tie at Newton South last week. The Hillies were then edged by North Andover 4-3 at home on Friday night. They are at Boston Latin on Saturday and at Wayland on Wednesday. The squad will return home on Jan. 30 to face Bedford.

The boys swimming team had a three-meet win streak snapped on Friday afternoon. After picking up wins over Burlington, Lowell and Melrose, the Hillies fell to defending MVC champs Andover 94-86. They bring their 3-2 mark into an MVC matchup at Chelmsford on Friday. They are back at their home pool Jan. 23 to take on North Andover.

The boys and girls ski teams started up the 2013 race season last week. The girls squad took on Masconomet and North Andover while the boys faced Andover and Austin Prep. The boys races are held on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and the girls race on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All races are held at Bradford Ski.

The indoor track teams participated in the 2013 MSTCA State Indoor Relays on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center. The girls Distance Medley team placed third out of 19 teams and the 1600 Sprint Medley team was seventh out of 37 teams. On the boys side, the top performance was by the 4x200 Meter Relay team that placed eighth out of 46 teams.
