---- — It was MIAA State Championship weekend and Haverhill High School was well represented.
Several student-athletes had strong individual performances for the Hillies.
At the MIAA Division 1 Indoor Track & Field Championships, Alex Mahew was the top finisher for the Hillies. The senior had the top time in the preliminaries of the 55-yard dash. He was then edged in the finals by three-tenths of a second for a second-place finish. Senior Dan Burrows placed seventh in the shotput with a throw of 48 feet.
Girls finish 18th in MIAA Track & Field Championships
On the girls side, Riley Gilmore finished third in the 2-mile run with a time of 11:21.53 and Jackie Solimine was sixth in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:15.46. Samantha Wise finished 12th in the 1,000-meter run, while Kerin Thomas and Erin Connolly were 13th and 14th respectively in the 300-meter dash. The girls team finished 18th in the state and the boys team was 19th.
Diver places 12th at state championships
Sam Clough led the way for the Hillies at the MIAA Division 1 Swim & Dive State Championships held at Harvard last Sunday. Clough recorded a total score of 336 to place 12th in the 1-meter dive. Other strong performances included Sean Driscoll (20th in the 100 breaststroke), Matt Amadeo (22nd in the 100 butterfly and 30th in the 500 freestyle), Nick Roy (29th in the 100 butterfly and 31st in the 200 IM) and Max Koffman (27th in the 100 freestyle and 28th in the 200 freestyle).
Wrestlers qualify for state finals
Samie Al-Ziab continued his fabulous season at the MIAA Division 1 North Sectionals on Saturday. The sophomore placed second at 220 lbs to qualify for the state finals. Freshman Reece Millington also qualified with a third-place finish at 132 pounds, while freshman Luke Chretien placed fifth at 182 lbs. Al-Ziab and Millington will compete in the state finals at Newton South.
Boys basketball team awaits tourney pairings
The boys basketball team, 2013 Merrimack Valley Conference regular season champs, finished the regular season this week. The Hillies have qualified for the MIAA playoffs and await the tournament pairings, which will be announced on Friday. The playoff schedule will be posted on www.miaa.net and www.hillies.org.

Comedy Night March 8

Baseball team plans youth clinic
The Hillie baseball team will host a youth clinic on March 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. The clinic is open to children ages 5 to 13. The cost is $25 per person. Registration forms are available online at www.hillies.org by clicking on Athletics, or can be picked up at the high school, 137 Monument St.
