---- — The remarkable football season continued for the Hillies on Friday night. Haverhill downed North Andover 38-22 to improve to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the Merrimack Valley Conference. This marks just the second time in the past 40 years that Haverhill has won eight games in a season, matching the win total of the 2001 squad. The Hillies close out the 2012 campaign with the annual Thanksgiving game at Lowell. Kickoff is slated for 10 a.m.
Chance Brady is having a record breaking season for the Hillies. The senior running back was recently named the 2012 Massachusetts Referees Association Player of the Year. He will be honored on Nov. 19 at a special awards banquet hosted by the organization.
The Hillie swimmers had a great showing at the 2012 MIAA Division 1 North Sectionals at MIT on Saturday. Haverhill placed sixth out of 22 teams in the event. Senior Sarah Broderick broke a 22-year-old Haverhill High record with a time of 1:51.69 in the 200-yard freestyle. She placed second in that event before going on to win the 100-yard backstroke. Leigh Freeman and Michaela Sliney placed second and third respectively in the 1-meter dive. The Haverhill swimmers will finish up the 2012 season at the MIAA Division 1 State Finals on Sunday at Harvard University.
Jackie Solimine and Riley Gilmore led the way as the Haverhill High Girls Cross Country team placed ninth in the 2012 MIAA Division 1 North Sectional Meet. Solimine placed seventh and Gilmore was 10th in the field of 126 runners. Christian White was the top finisher on the boys’ side, placing 40th out of 161 runners.
