The Lamp Post

Double duty ... An electronic sign that measures the speed of vehicles passing by Walnut Square School on Main Street wasn’t displaying speeds at all early last week. Instead, it was programmed to show this message just before last week’s election: “Vote Tuesday.’’ The next day, it was back to warning people to slow down in the school zone.

The Lamplighter is wondering about the future of the old Paperboard company property on the Bradford side of the Merrimack River. The prime 23-acre site was left vacant when the company closed its doors two years ago. The new owner has demolished most of the old buildings, clearing the way for new development, but he refuses to say what he will build there. There was talk months ago of a mix of retail and residential buildings, but the owner and city officials are saying no more about the plan.

In the days prior to the Nov. 6 elections, Mayor James Fiorentini campaigned for President Obama by going door to door in Plaistow. He said no one recognized him there, but when he traveled to Florida after the elections for a mini vacation, he bumped into people he knew everywhere he went, including on the plane and in a restaurant.

As soon as the campaign was over, many candidates’ signs were taken down quicker than Superstorm Sandy knocked many signs down the week before the election. Some of the more conspicuous signs were removed right after election day. They included state Senate candidate Paul Magliocchettii’s signs at the edge of Interstate 495 south. They were in a great spot during the campaign, right next to the well-recognized huge metal sculpture of a dog erected there years ago by local artist Dale Rogers. The spot is on land long owned by the Rogers family at the highway’s Ward Hill exit. The location apparently didn’t help Magliocchetti much, however, as he finished a distant third behind Senator-elect Kathleen O’Connor Ives and Shaun Toohey, Magliocchetti’s fellow member on the Haverhill School Committee.
