Golf team swings toward possible title to cap successful season

---- — Many Haverhill High sports teams have had great success through the first half of the fall season.

Five teams are still in the hunt for not only a playoff berth, but also a possible Merrimack Valley Conference title.

While most of our teams have been making noise on the courts and fields of Haverhill High and Trinity Stadium, one team has been doing so at another location. Playing out of Bradford Country Club, the Hillie golf team has quietly put together one of the best seasons in recent memory.

With just two matches remaining in the regular season, Haverhill has compiled an impressive 9-3-1 record. The season started with a win over perennial league power Billerica and a tie with Chelmsford. The Hillies then reeled off four straight MVC wins, including a 15-5 victory over rival Andover. The Hillies first league loss was a narrow 11-9 defeat at the hands of new league member North Andover.

The Hillies have been led all season by team captains Scott Farley and Ryan Paris, who have occupied the No. 1 and No. 2 slots in the lineup. A slew of young players has made the difference though, adding depth and talent to head coach Kevin Murphy’s squad.

The golf team was the first Hillie team to qualify for the MIAA playoffs this fall. They will have a distinct advantage this post-season as Bradford Country Club will host the MIAA Division 1 North Sectionals for the first time. On Oct. 22, more than 100 of the best high school golfers in the MIAA North Section will travel to Haverhill in an attempt to qualify for the State Finals. The Hillies have qualified as a team, meaning their top six golfers will compete in the Sectional. Look for the Hillies to make some noise on their home course.

The golfers close out the regular season Oct. 11, when they take on Central Catholic at Atkinson Country Club. They will then compete in the MVC Championship Tournament at Vesper Country Club before preparing for the MIAA Sectionals.
