The Lamp Post

He’s back: The local man who lost both of his legs to a motorcycle crash is out of Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and back in his Haverhill home. Nick Spinelli, dad of Anthony Spinelli, AGE, sent out a text message saying Anthony has returned. Last month, The Eagle-Tribune told Anthony’s courageous story.

Causing confusion: Did anyone notice that state highway truck hauling a blinking sign on the highway the other night? The truck was travelling north on I-495 in Haverhill about 2 a.m. It carried a big electronic sign that displayed a blinking arrow — the kind you usually see as you approach a paving job or other project on the highway. The signs warn drivers to avoid the lane where the work is happening. But in this case, since the sign was moving, it was confusing to the Lamplighter and other drivers.

Stealing the show? City Councilor Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien enjoyed her moment in the spotlight at the recent Haverhill Community TV 25th anniversary dinner. The event featured local politicians, businessmen and other well-known people acting in movie trailers that spoofed well-known films. Daly O’Brien starred as a high school girl in a ’50s-style version of a monster flick. When it was announced that she won an “Oscar’’ for her work in front of the camera, she waltzed to the podium, where she sang a Marilyn Monroe-style happy birthday song to HCTV. She capped it off by saying, “Andre, you lose again’’ — pointing her words toward local fiction writer Andre Dubus, who was jokingly “nominated’’ for an award in every category, but lost each time.

Speaking of the ‘Academy Awards’: The Lamplighter heard some time ago that Northern Essex Community College President Lane Glenn had acting in his background, but there was no way to prepare for Glenn’s performance in one of the comedic movie trailers featured at HCTV’s 25th anniversary party. He was a riot.
