Ask the mayor
Q. As a resident of Casablanca Courts condominiums, I want to know how you can make recycling easier for us. Some, like me, don't have basements so there is no place for us to store recyclables. Many of us would like a large recycling area on-site. I have stored paper until I can bring it to Primrose Street recycling area, but even though I rinse out plastic and glass, it still smells by the time I can transport it there.
A. Thank you for asking.
We do not have the means, as a city, to provide you with a central recycling area on site at your condominium complex. You need to contact your condominium association concerning that, and if they have a centralized area, we are happy to work with them.
We are working on ways to improve recycling here in Haverhill. My budget calls for a small expansion of recycling hours to keep the recycling center open on Tuesday night, in addition to the Wednesdays and Saturday mornings it is now open.
In the long term, we would all like expanded curbside recycling. The problem is it will cost us money. Because we are a host community to the trash burning facility, the economics are such that, unlike other communities, expanded curbside recycling does not pay, it costs. As our financial situation continues to improve, our hope is to go to expanded curbside recycling in the future. James J. Fiorentini, Mayor
