What happens if it rains?
Haverhill's Independence Day celebration begins at 5:30 on Thursday, July 3, at Haverhill Stadium on Lincoln Avenue. A fireworks display begins at 10 p.m.
But so far this summer, evening rains have been a constant threat.
In case of heavy rain, the celebration will move to Saturday, July 5, with fireworks again scheduled for 10 p.m.
The theme of this year's celebration is "Honoring Our Veterans." Food vendors will serve hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, slush, fried dough, Italian sausage sandwiches and soft drinks. Children's activities include a bubble bounce sponsored by Haverhill Community Television, an obstacle course and slide. Admission is $1, free for children under 6.
Vinny Ouellette, Haverhill's director of human services, said the fireworks display depends on the clouds on the night of the display. A low cloud ceiling will obscure the fireworks. The decision about whether to have the display will be up to those in charge of shooting off the fireworks, he said.
