Annual Rockingham County 4-H Benefit Auction begins at 5 p.m. in the 4-H Exhibit Hall at the Stratham Fair, Rte. 33 at Stratham Hill Park from 5 p.m. until the last item is sold. The auction features merchandise and gift certificates donated by businesses throughout Rockingham County as well as home baked goodies and craft items. Some featured items include quilts, wall hangings, a signed footbal from the New Engalnd Patriots and an autographed picture of Kevin Youkilis of the Boston Red Sox. Funds raised at the auction will benefit scholarships to 4-H programs for youth and volunteers, club community service project grants, and 4-H college scholarships. Kittens for adoption: From now until July 27, Animal Rescue Merrimack Valley is reducing its adoption fee to $100 for cats over six months old and $125 for kittens under six months old. The cats will be available at the Plaistow, N.H Petco on Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m., North Andover Petco on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Salem, N.H., Petco on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ARMV will be giving away a $20 gas card with every adoption. The cats are pre-neutered, tested, microchipped and have shots up to date. A one-month pet health insurance and a bag of food is also included. An Evening of Rock!: The Friends of The Parker River Wildlife Refuge and the Plum Island Airfield will be hosting a benefit concert to help preserve natural wildlife resources and support the communities history on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Plum Island Airfield, Hanger #1, Newbury. The Firehouse Center for the Arts Gallery is accepting submissions from artists for their work to be exhibited in the gallery until Dec. 31. Artists may submit proposals for exhibition of two-dimensional work in any medium. Exhibits consist of one or two people, group or themed shows, and normally run for four weeks. Submissions to include: an artist biography and resume; 10 to 20 images, preferably in a digital format, of work that is indicative of the current style of the artist; and a cover letter with name and contact information. Teen summer fun: "Fit and Swim" offers children ages 12 to 17 the opportunity to enjoy the pool during scheduled open swim and work out in the fitness center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 8 p.m. now through August 31.

Water Safety Training Course: The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course will be offered on Aug. 16 and 17 and Aug. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost of the course is $325 members, $375 non-members.

Scamper Camp allows children, ages 3 years to Kindergarten, to enjoy swimming lessons, dancing, movement, fitness, art and science projects. The program will be held in four two-week sessions that run Monday through Thursday from 8:45 a.m. to noon. Children must be toilet trained. The cost is $200 per session for members.

Kids Club Camp offers swimming lessons, open swims, dance, yoga, fun fitness, activity projects and science games for children in grades 1 - 4. The program will be held in eight one-week sessions that run Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $100 per session.

Lunch Bunch allows children to extend their camp day and enjoy a lunch from home with friendship and camp counselor supervision from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The cost is $12 per week.

Schools out: The EEC licensed School's Out Program, designed for families needing full days of child care this summer, will run at one of the Newburyport Public schools. The program includes outdoor fun, sports, art, science, gardening and field trips. Limited three-day options are available. Children in grades 1 - 4 are welcome.

Free film and concert series

"The Women" will be shown on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m., with commentary at 6:30 p.m. An all-female cast sparks this adaptation of Clare Booth Luce's comedy about divorce and female friendship. The story progresses from harmless gossip to vicious verbal backstabbing. This black-and-white film is 134 minutes.

Gerry Johnston will perform on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. for a night of guitar music with Broadway favorites and other popular tunes.

"The Lady of the Eve" will be shown on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m., with commentary at 6:30 p.m. Distaff card shark (Barbara Stanwyck) spots a cast-iron sucker in beer heir "Hopsie" Pike. Hopsie is too engrossed in his lifelong project, a book called "Are Snakes Necessary," to care much for his millions and Eve's father, Handsome Harry Harrington, who can produce more aces than a playing card factory, sends her into action in this statement on the battle of the sexes. This black-and-white film is 94 minutes.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge

Volunteers needed: The Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge needs volunteers to help staff The Plover's Nest gift shop and bookstore at the Refuge Headquarters and Visitor Center. The store will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will be needed to help customers and act as cashiers during those times. Training will be provided. Old Sturbridge Village summer 2008 activities

Discovery Camp: Discovery Camp allows children to enjoy five days of fresh air and fun. Dress in 1830s costume and explore the past through hands-on history. The Abstract Artist Group will exhibit its work at the Newburyport Art Association, 65 Water St., Newburyport, Aug. 7 through 17. Exhibit hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. This year's show will feature 17 artists from a wide variety of backgrounds and styles who have connections with the North Shore. Annual "Artists at the Brush" exhibition through July 27 at Brush Art Gallery and Studios, 256 Market St., Lowell. The exhibit will showcase 14 artists who maintain rented studios at the gallery. "Remix" features the work of four visual artists — Doug Miles (San Carlos Apache), Ryan Red Corn (Osage), Courtney Leonard (Sinnecock) and Bunky Echo-Hawk (Pawnee and Yakama) — who have blended Native American tradition with modern ideas to create powerful contemporary art. Collegium Vocale Gent under guest director and fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 8 p.m. at First Church Congregational, 11 Garden St., Cambridge. Their program entitled "The Haydn Songbook" will feature songs written by Joseph Haydn during the 1790s.
