Charter schools plan lotteries

Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School will fill its remaining eight seats by lottery.

The school has 572 students enrolled; there is an enrollment cap of 580.

The eight available seats are in grade one. The lottery is open to residents who live anywhere in the city.

The lottery will be drawn at Silver Hill at 675 Washington St. on Aug. 11 at 10 a.m.

Any applications for other grades will be placed on a waiting list.

Application forms are available on the Haverhill Public Schools Web site in English and Spanish, and at the Burnham Registration Center at 45 Fountain St.

Application forms should be submitted by 2 p.m. Aug. 4 at Silver Hill's front office.

At Hill View Montessori Charter Public School, there are openings for students entering sixth grade, but enrollment forms will be accepted for students entering all grades. Those students not offered a position for the fall remain on a waitlist until a position becomes available.

A public lottery will be Aug. 14 at 5 p.m.

Hill View Montessori is a public, tuition-free school that operates on a charter given by the state.

The school opened in 2004 and enrolls 290 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. It offers a Montessori-based education.

Social and emotional development, as well as academic excellence, are emphasized in multi-age classrooms where teachers deliver instruction primarily in small groups or individually.

The school offers full-day kindergarten, an extended school day and extended child-care.

Sessions, including tours, for parents to learn about the school, will be at the school, 551 Washington St., are scheduled for July 31 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 5 at 9 a.m.

Seats available for all-day kindergarten

Haverhill's public school system has seats available in its all-day kindergarten programs at the Crowell, Greenleaf and Walnut Square elementary schools. Classes begin Sept. 2. Program hours are 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. An extended day option (3:15 to 5 p.m.) is available at no additional charge. Cost is $4,100 for a full year for in-state residents and $5,675 for out-of-state. Three payment options are available. A deposit of $275 is due at registration. Transportation is provided by the parent or guardian for out-of-neighborhood school districts. A 10 percent price reduction is available for a second child in the program. First part of registration must be done in person in Room 104, City Hall, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Second part must be done at the Parent Center at the Nettle Middle School, 150 Boardman St. For an appointment, call 978-469-8722.

Automotive scholarships available

Valvoline is offering a scholarship to aid students in pursuit of an automotive technical career. Known as the Valvoline Automotive Technical Scholarship, the program will award five $1,000 scholarships along with a $10,000 grand prize scholarship. The program is being offered to students between the ages of 16 and 25 who are planning to attend an accredited technical institution such as New England Institute of Technology. Students can register at www.valvoline.com/pages/prizezone. Entry deadline is Dec. 1. Drawings will be conducted monthly from July 15 through Nov. 15. The grand prize winner will be selected on or about Dec. 15.

Free preschool screening

Haverhill public schools provides free preschool screening to 3- and 4-year-old children in Haverhill. Preschool screening is a brief look at a child's overall development including the areas of language, motor skills, and thinking and reasoning skills. Screening is a brief, child-friendly, play-oriented time during which a trained preschool teacher will work with the child. The information gained from preschool screening may help answer some of parents' questions and help make decisions about good learning experiences for your child. Fit 'n' Fun after-school program

Cedarland Family Fun Center will offer after-school care for children in grades one through five starting this fall. Indoor and outdoor activities vary by season and include indoor play maze, outdoor playground, indoor swimming, sports games, basketball, mini-golf and batting. Homework time and arts and crafts will also be offered. Children can be registered for up to five days a week. Drop-in care will be available if space allows and paperwork is complete. Bus transportation will be provided from Bradford Elementary and Greenleaf schools in Haverhill. Cedarland is at 931 Boston Road.
