'Weathering the Storm'
The North of Boston Media Group, in cooperation with Suffolk University, the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, presents "Weathering the Storm," a business survival breakfast series. The series will provide tips to help businesses survive in these tough economic times. The series takes place at The Eagle-Tribune office, 100 Turnpike St. (Route 114) in North Andover. Remaining dates are Thursday, Feb. 12, and Thursday, Feb. 26, from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Featured speakers are David Hartstein, president of Kabloom; Professor Michael Barretti, director of the Institute for Executive Education at Suffolk University; and Lu Ann Reeb, president of Skyways Communications LLC. Network at NECC to aid nonprofits
Nonprofit organizations in the Merrimack Valley, struggling more than ever because of the downturn in the nation's economy, are able to access premier grant research databases as well as attend professional grant research and grant writing workshops at a newly created Grants Resource Network in the library of the Lawrence campus of Northern Essex Community College on Franklin Street. All access is free. The Grant Resource Network is a partnership between the Associated Grant Makers of Massachusetts, Jericho Road Lawrence Inc. and Northern Essex Community College.
Business networking group to meet
The Haverhill chapter of Business Network International has a free networking breakfast every Friday at 7 at the First Presbyterian Church of Haverhill, 346 Broadway. New businesses are welcome. The Haverhill Public Library provides a bulletin board for local businesses to display 3-by-5-inch cards. Cards will be dated and posted for six months. For information, call 978-317-1586.

Tsongas to speak at luncheon: Congresswoman Niki Tsongas will speak at a Chamber luncheon on Friday, Feb. 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Maria's Family Restaurant, 81 Essex St. in Haverhill. Tsongas will speak about homeland security, national security and the new administration, and the House Armed Services Committee. The Safety, Security, Defense and Aerospace Committee, in partnership with Raytheon Co. and Trinity EMS, hosts the event. The luncheon will include a question-and-answer portion at the end of the program. Admission is $24 for Chamber members and $30 for nonmembers.
Bowling business after hours: The Haverhill Chamber will host Massachusetts Business After Hours at Academy Lanes, 725 S. Main St. in Bradford, on Monday, Feb. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. To celebrate 45 years of bowling in Bradford, Academy Lanes will open that night just for the Chamber event. Admission is $10 for chamber members and $15 for nonmembers.

Free advice: Service Corps of Retired Executives — SCORE — offers free, confidential advice to individuals starting a business or already in business. Sessions are Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce. Until the chamber's home at 87 Winter St. is rehabilitated, sessions will be in the Chamber's temporary office in the Landmark Building, Merrimack Street.

New FMLA regulations explained: The MVCC Human Resources Association presents "The New FMLA Regulations," co-sponsored by First Health of Andover. The event takes place Thursday, Feb. 12, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Andover Country Club at 60 Canterbury St., Andover. Attendees to this program will receive comprehensive guidance on the new 2009 Family and Medical League Act Regulations and related topics. Special report from Washington: The Government Affairs Committee of the MVCC presents "A Special Report from Washington: The Challenges Facing the United States in 2009 and How is your Business Impacted?" The event will take place on Monday, Feb. 23, from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. at the Wyndham Andover Hotel on 123 Old River Road in Andover. A full breakfast is included. Congressman John Tierney and Congresswoman Niki Tsongas will speak. Special guest moderator is Warren E. Tolman, a television commentator and former state senator.
