The Haverhill Gazette

---- — It is hard to believe, but Alex Mahew got even faster last week. The senior placed third in the All-New England Championship meet and did so in record-breaking fashion … again. Mahew ran the 55-meter dash in 6.48 seconds, beating the school record of 6.50 he set the week before at the MIAA State Championship. The previous record of 6:58 was set in 1991 by Rusty White.

Boys basketball team has best season in years

The boys basketball team wrapped up one of its best seasons in more than a decade. The Hillies, seeded No. 14 in the MIAA Division 1 North Championship, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Haverhill edged No. 3 Westford 62-59 to advance to the quarterfinals, where it fell to No. 6 Lynn English. The Westford game was the first tournament win for Haverhill basketball since 2001. The Hillies won 12 of their last 16 games of the year to finish 12-11.

Something to cheer about

The Hillie cheerleaders had a great finish to their competition season. They placed third in the Merrimack Valley Conference Championship to qualify for the MSSAA Regionals. The team just missed a state final appearance, placing fourth in the regionals at Lowell High School on Sunday afternoon.

Hillie wrestler goes up against the best

Samie Al-Ziab competed against the best in New England over the weekend at the 2013 New England Wrestling Championship in Providence, R.I. The sophomore went 2-2 in the event, including a pin in his first match of the tournament.
