Local girl wins Grange competitions

Haverhill resident Brett Johnson was a big winner in a pair of Massachusetts State Grange contests last month.

Johnson finished in second place in the vocal category of the Massachusetts State Grange Talent Contest and third place in the prepared speech category of the State Grange Public Speaking Contest.

Johnson, representing Laurel Grange of West Newbury #161, sang "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri to take a third-place prize. She competed against Grange members and non-members on April 29 for both contests, which were held in Boylston.

The Massachusetts State Grange is a fraternal community organization founded in 1873. Granges are located in numerous communities throughout Massachusetts and have interests in education, agriculture and family activities.
