Hole-in-One Contest is next month

It's time to sharpen up your golf swing.

The 43rd Annual Santa Fund Hole-in-One Contest is just over a month away.

The popular event gives participants a chance to win prizes while supporting the Gazette Santa Fund. The fund provides financial holiday help to needy families.

The contest will be October 10 to 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Oct. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Garrison Golf Center on Hilldale Avenue. All proceeds will go to the Santa Fund, which distributes money through the Salvation Army and Haverhill Community Action.

Last year, the contest raised $4,110 despite poor weather. That total included $2,700 on the final day of the event. Rain eliminated one day of the contest last year, but it still generated the same amount of money as it did in 2010.

Local businesses donate gift certificates and other items to serve as prizes for the tournament. To participate, golfers pay $8 for a bucket of balls and drive them as close as they can to the hole, which is 150 yards away.

The Murphy family has hosted this event since they opened the golf center in 1970.
