Famed designer's big shoe unveiled soon
The much-anticipated Stuart Weitzman shoe will be unveiled on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 5 p.m. in the Hamel Mill Lofts building at 40 Locke St.
Weitzman, an internationally known designer of women's shoes, got his start in the business at his father's shoe factory, Mr. Seymour's Shoes, in Haverhill.
He and is wife, Jane, and daughter, Rachel, designed a 6-foot-tall shoe as part of the Soles of Haverhill "Shoe-la-bration" celebration. It is named "A Weitzman Family Affair — Three Generations."
The shoe is a red background with the designs of nine famous Weitzman shoes painted on it, including Weitzman's popular $1 million and $2 million sandals that were seen on the Oscars red carpet on the well-manicured feet of Hollywood starlets.
The other shoes are the Rita, Ruby, Petals, Mille de Fleur, Peepers, Vie en Rose and Eve.
The design was carried out by Bradford artist Liz Persing and has been encrusted with clear Swarovsky crystals as well as ruby-, emerald- and sapphire-toned crystals.
Unlike the dozen other shoes created for the Shoe-la-bration, the Weitzman shoe will remain indoors, safely inside the Hamel Mills building.
The Hamel Mill building is not far from Weitzman's father's factory and is an old shoe factory building as well. It is now being coverted into luxury loft apartments.
Congresswoman Niki Tsongas and Massachusetts Cultural Council Director Anita Walker will speak at the unveiling ceremony.
Organizers are still awaiting word about whether Jane Weitzman will be able to attend the ceremony.
Weitzman's shoes are sold in 42 countries and made at his factory in Spain.
