New local TV show focuseson downtown

The Haverhill Gazette

---- — Haverhill Community Television will present a new show that takes a look at downtown Haverhill and how to improve the area.

“Eyes Wide Open” will air on Channel 22 on June 20 at 9:30 p.m. and June 21 at 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

It can also be viewed at Haverhill Community Television’s website, where video streams live, at http://www.haverhillcommunitytv.org/watch-now/channel-22-live-stream/.

“Eyes Wide Open” is a joint venture conceived by Celeste Hynick with help by Mike Valvo. They want to involve the public in a dialogue designed to shape Haverhill’s future. A crew from Haverhill Community TV is helping with the production of the show.

The “Eyes Wide Open” presentation is given by Hynick, an architect, and Valvo, an interior and environmental designer, who both live in Haverhill. The purpose of the presentation is to open viewers’ eyes to the possibilities in Haverhill’s downtown.

The presentation focuses on two areas: The street (specifically Merrimack and Washington Streets) and the river. The presentation poses three questions with each image of downtown shown:

What is positive about what you see?

What needs improvement?

What possibilities exist?

The intent of this presentation is to spur positive things to happen in the city and urge residents to get involved in making Haverhill a great place to live and work.

Originally designed as a PowerPoint, the presentation was first formally presented last year to the city’s Downtown and Waterfront Master Planning Committee. The presentation sparked a discussion about how it might be shared with a wider audience.

John Cuneo, who is a member of the waterfront committee, the director of Community Action Inc., and an HCTV enthusiast, was impressed with the program. He sought help from Haverhill Community TV. Chris Bowden and Christian Cavicchio of HCTV then began working on the project.
