Job offers made to 4 Lawrence firefighters

Residents of Haverhill can expect at least three more former Lawrence jakes to be added to the city's fire department this year.

Mayor Fiorentini announced last week, through a Facebook posting, that the city had extended offers of employment to four firefighters, three of whom tentatively accepted and one who declined.

"We've made the offer," said Fiorentini.

The firefighters will not be identified until they are on the job, Fiorentini said.

The firefighters could begin work for the city as soon as Sept. 12. The mayor said he will continue seeking a fourth firefighter from the civil service's statewide rehire list.

With these hires, Fiorentini said he's made good on his campaign promise to hire six firefighters.

Two firefighters were hired in the spring.

In July, Lawrence had laid off 23 firefighters as part of an effort to bring its budget problems under control.

The mayor submitted a request to Civil Service for the names of eligible Lawrence firefighters earlier in the summer. That request was just recently approved, Fiorentini said.
