Much has been made of the $1 million that Haverhill spent to rebuild Swasey Field and add a water park there, but “Swasey Field’’ does not exist on Google maps.
It is labeled Passaqua Playground, the park’s original name from decades ago.
A friend of the Lamplighter wrote in to point that out.
It’s about time
That big, deep pothole on the side street next to the Mediterranean pizza and subs shop has finally been fixed.
It was filled recently, weeks after the Lamplighter pointed out it had been there since the early spring thaw.
City workers did a good job repairing many of the potholes across Haverhill that popped up this winter and spring, but somehow they missed this one for quite a while.
Big winnings cut in half
A Haverhill woman was overjoyed when she won more than $2,000 recently in a bingo game at the Plaistow Fish and Game Club.
The woman, nearly 80 years old, told the Lamplighter she was sweating as she waited for the winning number in the big game of the night.
When her number was called, it was far and away her biggest win in the many years she has played weekly bingo games at the club.
There was one downfall — she and her daughter have an agreement to split their winnings evenly each time they play, so the $2,000 quickly turned to $1,000 for the woman.
Spreading the word
All of Haverhill’s politicians were on board for the push for a new school, approved by voters last week — and Mayor James Fiorentini did his part.
He did a mass emailing urging residents to get to the polls. The proposal called for Haverhill to pay about a third of the cost of a new building to replace the deteriorating Hunking School, with the state to pay the rest.
