The Lamp Post

For a short time last week, it was impossible to drive in or out of the John Greenleaf Whittier Birthplace. Whittier Road was blocked at Amesbury Road for bridge repairs, and a live wire fell across the road on the other side of the birthplace. It was only a short-lived problem, but it got folks thinking.

In 1896 it cost $2 to register a dog in Bradford, according to some documents recently uncovered. Now it can cost 10 times that much.

The Kiwanis Clubs of Haverhill are going along with national policy and teaming with the Boys and Girls Club to share proceeds from fundraising events.

Speaking of the Kiwanis Club, The Lamplighter wishes to congratulate longtime Haverhill reporter and photographer Barney Gallagher on his recent nomination to the service club's Legion of Honor for his longtime membership in that organization.

BERGERON BULLETIN: Did you notice there was no mention of Tom Bergeron on the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon this past weekend? He spent much time on the program in past years and was thought by some to be a shoo-in for Lewis' replacement when the time came.

Rescue vehicles, like fire trucks and ambulances, carry medication to help relieve suffering by persons allergic to bee stings. One such episode was recorded this week in the city.

This week's speaker at Rotary will be a familiar face to members and guests. Mayor James Fiorentini planned to speak to the group at its Thursday luncheon.

Have you adopted your duck yet? The Rotary Club's annual Rubber Duck Regatta takes place on Saturday, Sept. 11, when thousands of rubber ducks will be dropped off the Basiliere Bridge to race to the Crescent Yacht Club to win prizes for those who "adopt" them. Adoption papers are available at businesses throughout the city or at the Rubber Duck Regatta phone line at 978-374-5223. The ducks will enter the water around 4 p.m., and those who wish may watch them race to the finish line across from the yacht club. Prizes include a car, Red Sox tickets, a Florida trip, golf outings, and the chance to win $1 million. Duck adoption fee is $5, with discounts for multiples. The Rotary Club donates to 40 local charities each year, including the Gazette's Santa Fund. Good luck, everyone!

There is a slight change in this year's downtown Italian festival. In years past, most of the activities took place on Washington Street. This year's event, which takes place on Sept. 26 from noon to 4 p.m., will take advantage of the new waterfront boardwalk.
