---- — Along with raising money to help homeless people, the annual Cycle for Shelter event is considered one of the finest bicycle rides in the country.
The event, now in its 25th year, will return July 28 to the Haverhill campus of Northern Essex Community College.
This year’s Cycle for Shelter offers four fully-supported rides: A 25-mile weekend warrior ride, 50-mile half century, 62-mile metric century, and a 100-mile century loop that travels along the scenic New Hampshire seacoast and then joins the 62-mile route on the back roads of Northern Essex County.
Thousands of riders and corporate sponsors have helped raised almost $1 million over the last 25 years to provide shelter, affordable housing and services for homeless individuals and families supported by Emmaus Inc. Last year’s Cycle for Shelter raised $117,000 and this year’s goal is to raise $120,000. It’s not too late to sign up. Participants must raise a minimum of $200. Registration is $75 or $100 on the day of the event.
Food and beverages will be available throughout the day. A barbecue will be provided by Emmaus staff, Longhorn Steakhouse, UNO’s, Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods Inc. and the Chicken Connection. Massages and shower facilities will be available after the ride. Urban Adventours in Boston is offering a 15-percent discount on bike rentals and a 50-percent discount on bike shipping.
A 25th anniversary celebration cookout will take place following the ride and will include a retrospective, dedication and a cake baked by Cakes by Erin. Alumni of the event along with volunteers, riders and donors are invited.
Volunteers are needed for early morning and late afternoon to help with set up and clean up. Massage therapists are needed between noon and 4 p.m. This year’s Cycle for Shelter is presented by International Cars Ltd. and the Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union. Gold sponsor is TD Bank.
