The Lamp Post

The Lamplighter had a tough time trying to get around construction on Route 125 last Monday. The road was closed at the intersection of Elm and Main streets near Bradford Common. The Lamplighter almost ended up in Groveland trying to avoid construction because of the lack of convenient detour signs.

Haverhill artist Dale Rogers was selected as one of five finalists by Susan Szenasy, editor-in-chief with Metropolis magazine, in the Use of Urban Space art category of the world's largest art prize competition.

Rogers' piece, titled "Flight,'' conveys the balance between fear and freedom. On the line is the chance to win $20,000.

ArtPrize is a radically open, international art competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Its mix of public vote and professional juries sets it apart from other art events. This year, 1,517 installations from 46 countries and 41 U.S. states and territories are competing for one of 16 prizes, ranging from $5,000 to $200,000, for a grand total of $560,000.

Five jurors each oversaw one of five categories, including: Two-Dimensional Art, Three-Dimensional Art, Time and Performance Art, Use of Urban Space, and Outstanding Venue.

Speaking of local artists, Bradford resident Don Toothaker has been recognized by the organization Creative Haverhill as a prominent local artist for his black and white series "Haverhill at Night."

As a selected artist, he is featured in a short documentary on YouTube. You can find it by searching "Public and Private Passions.'' Check out the third video. His segment is the second half about 18:40 minutes. It can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aghbml3dMI.

Toothaker's prints are being featured as part of a store front art project in Downtown Haverhill at 90 Washington St., next to the Tap Restaurant.

Ruth’s House, a nonprofit thrift store located at 111 Lafayette Square will celebrate its 20th year of service to the community on Oct. 18. But, the celebration won't be held until next April to allow more time for planning the event.

Last week, members of Ruth's House as well as the food pantry at Sacred Hearts Church and the Haverhill Salvation Army attended the grand opening of Burlington Coat Factory in Westgate Plaza. All three agencies received donations of children's items and housewares from the store. All of the items will be given to the local families they serve.
