City, businesses reach trash compromise

Trash pickup for the city's mercantile district will continue at the expense of the city, but will be dramatically reduced.

The city will also extend curbside recycling collection to Haverhill's small businesses.

The Board of Health approved the new regulations, which go into effect on Sept. 13.

Businesses in the city's so-called mercantile area — primarily the businesses along streets between the Comeau and Basiliere bridges — will have their trash picked up on Fridays and will be limited to a single 96-gallon covered trash bin.

Previously, the businesses were able to put out two 96-gallon bins twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

To offset the loss of a bin and an extra day of pickup, the businesses will also be able to participate in the city's single-stream curbside recycling program, with pick up on Fridays. They will follow the same rules regarding what can be recycled that Haverhill residential customers follow.

Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce President Jim Jajuga thanked the board for understanding the needs of business owners.

"We really appreciate your reconsideration," said Jajuga. "You listened to the concerns of the business community."

All three members of the board say they're happy to have worked out a compromise with businesses of Haverhill.

"I needed to hear some people talk about it," said Dr. Carl Rosenbloom, the health board's chairman.

Larger businesses and restaurants do not receive municipal trash or recycling collection. They are required to buy or rent a Dumpster and to arrange pickup service with a private hauler.
