Nominate a Garden of the Month: The Haverhill Garden Club is seeking nominations for its Garden of the Month program. If you know someone who has an outstanding garden that could be the Garden of the Month for August, call 978-521-0872. The Haverhill Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs Inc., New England Region, and the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Northern District.

Woodcarving class resumes: The city’s Council on Aging has resumed its wood carving class on Fridays at 10 a.m. Students are taught by master carver Fred Arakelian. A carving kit of supplies is provided at a one-time-per-project charge of $18. Carving knives are loaned to participants for free. Course cost is $5 per class for an eight-week session. Registration is required for new students by calling Kathy Bresnahan (ext. 11) or Rita LaBella (ext. 16) at 978-374-2390.

Whittier Birthplace offers free admission: Whittier Birthplace is participating in both the regional “17th Century Saturdays” and national “Blue Star Museums” programs, with both offering free admission opportunities. Admission is free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of July, August and September as part of 17th Century Saturdays, an Escapes North cultural tourism initiative led by the North of Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. Whittier Birthplace offers free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day. The military program is part of Blue Star Museums, in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense. Active duty military include Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, active duty National Guard and active duty Reserve members. Visit online at www.johngreenleafwhittier.com.

Authors Expo planned: The next New England Authors Expo presented by Pear Tree Publishing in Bradford will be held on July 31 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers. This event is open to the public and is free to attend. Exhibitor set-up starts at 10 a.m. This expo is a grassroots event intended to promote local New England authors and illustrators. Many authors, illustrators, publishers, writer’s groups, schools and businesses regularly attend. The event also has a growing list of celebrities that attend and is an opportunity to network as well as buy and sell books. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
